Lighting is a very important feature of a room, both from the aspect of function as well as design.  Having the correct functional lighting in a room is vital for having the correct amount of light for performing tasks that are specific to that area.  The type of lighting fixture you choose should be selected based on the lighting level it provides as well as the design and style that it will bring to a room. Lighting comes in many shapes, sizes and styles for achieving different decorative looks and providing different qualities of light.  Some of the different lighting fixtures available include ceiling, wall, floor and table light fixtures.

Ceiling lighting fixtures come in many different sizes, styles, and shapes and each of these characteristics should be considered when you are selecting lighting for a room in your home.  The simplest lighting fixtures available include flush or semi-flush mount styles and pendant lights that hold only one light bulb.  Chandeliers are on the opposite end of the spectrum as the most complex and visually interesting of all lighting. Chandeliers come in many different sizes and styles from the elegant and formal crystal chandeliers to the bold and rustic wrought iron chandeliers. Chandeliers generally project light upward toward the ceiling, giving the room they are a part of a soft glow and feeling of formality. Lighting is also a big factor to consider when selecting a ceiling fan since there are many different lighting fixtures attached to them - some project light upward, some downward. Track lighting, recessed lighting, and large florescent fixtures are other options available for ceiling lighting.

The most popular type of wall lighting is the sconce.  Sconces make great decorative wall structures and lighting sources for hallways and stairways.  Track lighting can also be used on walls.  Bath bars or vanity lights are another common wall lighting fixture used in bathrooms.

Lamps mostly make up the types of floor and table lighting available.  Lamps come in many styles and are used mostly as accessory lighting. Functionally, lamps are used to provide concentrated areas of lighting, such as by a bed for reading at night. There are some lamps that are for purely decorative lighting as well.  Floor lamps can be used as the main light source in some rooms.  Torchiere lamps and halogen lamps are open at the top and provide a large amount of lighting.
