For outdoor pool lights that are used for landscaping, just about any type that is used for regular landscaping will work nicely. Flood, tier, and post lights all make nice choices for illuminating the landscape and casting light on the swimming area.

Underwater outdoor pool lighting, on the other hand, comes in many different styles. Some types are designed for above ground versus in ground pools. Some are installed as permanent fixtures whereas others are detachable. Some outdoor pool lights are solar powered or uses rechargeable batteries whereas other types are electric. (If electric outdoor pool lights are used, it is important that they are installed correctly.)

Detachable outdoor pool lights have become very popular since they eliminate the need for extensive electrical work. Styles are made for both in ground and above ground pools. Many types available are mounted with clamps or brackets to the side of the pool. Another popular style of outdoor pool lights is floating lights. Solar or rechargeable floating lights make it possible for the middle of the pool to be illuminated.

Different qualities of underwater outdoor pool lights are available as well. LED, halogen, and incandescent varieties are made, each with their own benefits and slightly different luminescent qualities. Colors are also available, mostly achieved by putting lenses over outdoor pool lights or changing bulbs.
